‘That’s Some Bulls—-‘: Andra Day’s Censored Oscar Prince Quote
We no longer have to wonder what Andra Day said about Prince during the Oscars last night.
The actress' comments about the 1984 hit single "Purple Rain" were censored by ABC during last night's live telecast, but not by overseas outlets.
During a brief quiz-style game at the 93rd Academy Awards, which you can see below, host and actor Lil Rel Howry (Get Out, The Carmichael Show) tested attendees on their Oscar knowledge. After Questlove, who was carrying out DJ duties for the evening, played a snippet of the title track to Prince's 13-times platinum movie soundtrack, Howry asked Day if the song had been nominated for, or won, an Oscar.
"It's a brilliant song," Day replied, singing along to the chorus for a moment. "It probably wasn't even nominated and that's some bullshit."
It was the latter half of that quote that got Day, who was nominated that evening for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Billie Holiday in The United States vs. Billie Holiday, censored by ABC. Her quote, however did find itself unedited in the UK and on other international broadcasts and her words were confirmed on Twitter.
"I don't know how much that's going to cost you ABC," Howry said. "but it happened."
Censored or not, Day was correct. Though the overall soundtrack for Purple Rain won Best Original Score, the title track, nor any of the other tracks, was nominated for Best Original Song. That honor instead went to Stevie Wonder's "I Just Called To Say I Love You" from The The Woman In Red.
“This is very unbelievable,” Prince said in 1985 when he accepted the award for Best Score, noting he “could have never imagined this in (his) wildest dreams.”
